Revolt in Paris - the storming of the Bastille, 14 July 1789:

Louis took action in the last week of June to move more troops into Paris/Versailles. It was clear that he was planning to dissolve the National Assembly, using force if necessary.

11 July - with over 20,000 troops in the area, Louis felt strong enough to dismiss Necker, a popular minister, as Louis didn`t want to implement his reforms.

12 July - News of Necker`s dismissal reached Paris and inflamed the tense situation. High food prices had already led to rioting. Necker was seen as the minister to solve the economic crisis. Armed revolt was trigered by the oratory of Camille Desmoulins, who claimed that a massacre of the supporters of reformed was planned. People armed themselves, there were voilent clashes with royal troops and the hated customs posts around the city were attacked. When the Gardes-francaises were ordered to withdraw from Paris, many disobeyed and joined the people. That evening the Paris electors set up a citizen`s militia to maintain order.
