Successes
- Charles made William Laud the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1633
- He was an Arminian and introduced a number of reforms which reduced opportunities for Puritan worship and restored more ritual to the Church
- Although there was some opposition to these reforms, the absence of Parliament meant that there was limited opportunity to voice this
- Some changes were popular, for example, the Book of Sports was reissued in 1633 - this listed all of the activities that it was permissible to carry out on a Sunday and reintroduced Sunday ales
- Charles and Laud believed that the changes restored the beauty of Church ritual and encouraged true reverence for God
