Theravada Buddhism has 4 stages of enlightenment for one to become an Arhat:
- Sotapanna - stream-enterer
- Sakadagami - once-returner
- Anagami - non-returner
- Arhat - worthy one
Once you become an Arhat you are not reborn and so are free of the cycle of birth, death and rebirth (reaching Nirvana) - the goal of Theravada.
Mahayana's goal is to become a Bodhisattva - enlightenment for all
