The Oklahoma Land Rush (1889)

  • Indian Territory was the land the US government had set aside for settlement by the Plains Indians who lived to the East of the Mississippi river and had been forcibly relocated there under the Indian Removal Act (1830).
  • Indian territory was divided up into different sections for different tribes, and, in the middle of the territory, there was a section that was not officially designated to a tribe. White settlers had been trying to move into this land since the start of the 1880s, but the US army moved them off again as Indian Territory wasn't open…
