The Oedipus Complex

This is another theory that Freud formulated, which was actually a more convincing one, and had far more positive feedback compared to the Primal Horde theory.

He states that between the ages of 3-6, children are developing their sexual identity. They are realising the differences between men and women, and Frued goes on to day that at this age, the sons begin to see their fathers as rivals, and want the mother all to themselves. However, due to fearing the repercussions of harming the father, and the respect that they also have for the father, they begin to feel guilt. Freud says that it is this guilt that eventually develops into neurotic behaviour. He refers to the age between3-6 as the Oedipus Complex.

These children who now have this anxiety of having this internal love-affair with their mothers now fear castration. This is after realising that some people in the world dont have a penis, and they percieve this as a punishment, not considering that they are a different gender. Another possible reason for this anxiety may be that when the mother weans the child off breastfeading, the child feels like they have lost a part of them, hence fearing he may lost another. Finally, he could have this anxiety as he was found by his parents exploring his penis, and seeing how upset they were, fears the threat of losing it.

Both the Oedipus complex and the Primal Horde theory want to eliminate the father from the picture, and have the mother all to themselves.
