The Central Nervous System: (The Brain and the Spinal Cord)
Its 2 main functions are:
· The control of behaviour
· The regulation of the body’s physiological processes
The brain receives information from the sensory receptors (e.g. eyes, ears, skin) and sends messages to the muscles and glands of the body.
The Brain:
· Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain, and is divided into 4 different lobes, such as the frontal lobe, occipital lobe.
· Cerebellum sits underneath the cerebrum, and controls a person’s motor skills and balance.
· Diencephalon lies beneath the Cerebrum.
The Spinal Cord:
· Relay information between the brain and the rest of the body.
· Allows the brain to monitor and regulate bodily processes, such as digestion and breathing.
· Connected to different parts of the body, via parts of spinal nerves, which connect the specific muscles and glands.
The Peripheral Nervous System:
· Relay nerve impulses from the CNS to the rest of the body and from rest of the body to the CNS.
Two main divisions: Somatic Nervous System and the Autonomic Nervous System.
-Somatic Nervous System:
· Controls muscle movements and receives information from sensory receptors.
-Autonomic Nervous System:
· Governs vital functions in the body, such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal, and stress…
