  • Rusbult's investment model sees relationship satisfaction as dependent upon a consideration of percieved benefits, costs and the quality of possible alternative relationships
  • This model consists of three factors which positively link with commitment and these factors include are satisfaction level, comparison with altenatives and investment size
  • The satisfaction level refers to the positive and negative effects experienced within a relationship. Satisfaction comes from the degree to whih a partner meets an individual's needs e.g. emotional and sexual needs. The level of satisfaction will determine the commitment in the relationship
  • The quality of alternatives available may lead to an individual ending a relationship as an individual may see their needs being better met in an alternative relationship which would lead them to ending the relationship whereas a lack of alternative relationships may lead to stronger commitment
  • The benefits of not being in a relationship may also be weighed up and having no relationship at all is percieved as more attractive than being in an unhappy relationship, which may lead to ending a current relationship
  • The investment size made by individuals contributes to them maintenance and stability of a relationship. Investment is seen as anything an individual puts in
