WHO WAS LORD ROTHERMERE?

  • Lord Rothermere/Harold Harmsworth was the brother of lord Northcliffe.

  • Described as the dull plodding relation to Alfred's genius.

  • Hariold had a much more measured approach to business - he had an uncanny ability to predict the profitability of newspaper enterprise. Alfred saw newspapers as a way to champion his causes where Harold saw them purely as business.

  • When Alfred died in 1922, Harold bought his brother's stake in Associated Newspapers for £1.6 million. His emotional detachment can be seen when he sold The Times.

  • His business brain was revealed by a series of newspaper acquisition and sales that he made throughout the 1920s and 30s - some of which triggered a newspaper war between 1928 and 1929.

LORD ROTHERMERE AND BEAVERBROOK 

  • Lord Rothermere's business and political interests were closely tied up with Lord Beaverbrook.

  • He advised him on the launch of his newspaper empire and conveyed a sense of belief in him.

  • He was one of the sponsors for Aitken's elevation to Lord Beaverbrook in 1916.
