THE PROBLEM:
- Desert storms from Central Asia are causing global destruction
- Every spring, dust from China's northern deserts is carried eastward by the wind and blasted in Bejing
- This causes houses, cars and people to by coated in a layer of a choking blanket of particles
- City hospitals become packed with patients suffering from respiratory ailments
- The Gobi desert is rapidly growing and the dunes are now within 150 miles of Bejing
HOW THE PROBLEM HAPPENS:
- Desertification from overgrazing, deforestation and drought, which all create a layer of mobile topsoil
THE PLAN:
- The plan is the Green Great Wall - 2,800 mile network of forest belts designed to stop the sands
- Trees should serve as a windbreak and prohibit the desert from advancing
- Chinese officials predicted that within a decade the effort will 'terminate expansion of new desertification caused by human factors'
