Gatsby's glamorous parties = "his guests...his beach...his Rolls-Royce" (p.26) Using all his things, materalisitic and taking advantage.

Jordan's facade = "absently...she held my hand impersonally" (p.28) the adverbs suggest a facade that Jordan puts on of not caring, or does she really not care? Contrast with "I've just heard the most amazing thing," shows/exposes her facade, contrast to her usual not bothered attitude. 

Jordan = "I like large parties. They're so intimate. At small parties there isn't any privacy." Oxymoron, can lose yourself at large parties, no one is watching you. 

Nick about Gatsby = "you look at him sometimes when he thinks nobody's looking at him" (p.29) reveals his true self, similar to when he reaches for the green light. "One of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life" (p.32) makes you feel good, something special & unique about Gatsby

Gatsby's catchphrase = "old sport" uses to anyone, old-fashioned and almost a caring name; immediately creates a bond between him & others. Usually a phrase used by older, upper middle class. 

Gatsby's loneliness = "sudden emptiness...complete isolation the figure of the host,"(p.37)  although Gatsby is wealthy, he is clearly lonely, the reader questions why due to all his possessions. 

Nick's feelings for Jordan = "I was flattered to go places with her...I wasn't actually in love, but I felt a sort of tender curiousity" (p.38) Likes the attention. Juxtaposition "tender curiousity", Nick is aware of his feelings & controls them, or he feels uneasy with the feling of being in love, yet he admires Gatsby for his intense devotion to Daisy.

Nick's honesty = "I am
