Synopsis:

  • Nick Carraway opens the novel as the story's narrator
  • Tells us about his upbringing and the lessons that his family taught him
  • We learn about his past, education, and a sense of moral justice as he begins to tell the story of Jay Gatsby
  • This takes place a year after the actual events (this later links into Nick's reliability as a narrator, he could be somewhat unreliable due to working through the filter of memory)
  • The story begins when Nick moves from the midwest to West Egg, Long Island, near New York
  • He wants to become a 'well-rounded man', moves to New York to recapture some of that adventure and experience he had as a soldier in World War I
  • He tries to make his way as a bonds salesman, he rents a small house next to Gatsby's mansion
  • Across the bay, on East Egg, Nick's cousin Daisy Buchanan, and her husband Tom, live in a mansion that overlooks Gatsby's house.
  • Nick visits the Buchanan's and there meets Jordan Baker, a professional golfer 
  • The foursome talk about the merits of living in the East, planning what to do on the hottest day of the year and Jordan shows her disbelief that Nick doesn't know who Gatsby is 
  • While they discuss, Tom takes a phone call which Jordan informs Nick that it's his mistress, with Tom making no effort to cover up his affairs (Tom is already known for his infidelities)
  • Daisy works to set Nick and Jordan up, asking Nick about his supposed engagement and impending marriage to a girl back home
  • Nick reassures them that it is only rumours
  • After returning home in the evening, Nick notices a figure emerging from Gatsby's mansion while he sits outside
  • His initial response was to call out, but he resists as Gatsby 'gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone'
  • It was while watching Gatsby that Nick witnesses a curious event
  • Gatsby, standing alone in the darkness, reaches his arms out and begins trembling
  • This seems odd to Nick, as all he can make out is a green light, like the kind of…
