The Great American Desert:

Problems that detered settlers:

  • Extreme weather - it was often windy, as well as having extreme seasons.
  • Lack of shelter - it was flat grassland - no protection against the weather.
  • Lack of natural resources - settlers would have to find other ways to survive.
  • Lack of water - there were no rivers and the majority of water was found underground.
  • Natives - the Plains Indians scared white settlers; many feared attacks

Things that attracted white settlers:

  • Availablity of cheap/free land
