The Forge

LINE 1:

  • 'i' = adds to the personal subject matter - singular / child watching - ignoring - speaker could be a child - heritage - creating a poem like the blacksmith
  • 'door' 'dark' = alliteration, plosive - harsh
  • 'dark' = older time period / ambiguous, ominous - almost supernatural - negative connotation / a place that is no longer necessary for modern life: for instance, we no longer depend on horses hooves or wrought- iron nails / could suggest the unreachable past as well as the blackness of the anvil and the soot of the shop

LINE 2:

  • 'outside' 'old' = alliteration
  • 'iron hoops rusting' = older tools outside, unused / derelict
  • black smith = lost tridition

LINE 3:

  • 'inside' = contrast - exterior doesnt represent the talent within
  • 'short-pitched ring' = new equiptment

LINE 4:

  • 'sparks' = unpredictable, imagery, onamatepia- bringing it to life
  • 'sparks' 'hiss' 'shoe' = sibilance- sound of shoe in
