  • A dislike of urban life, embrace of the natural world.
  • A love of the supernatural
  • Use of ordinary language

She lived through the first world war, women's suffrage and two of her siblings were committed to mental institutions and branded insane. She made a pact never to marry because she might pass on her insanity through genes.

Themes of Women's Rights, Mental Illness and Nature.

The woman in the poem is poorly treated and the villagers that they chase her, negative connotations. Colloquial language to show men are stupid.

'bride' tells that they have never moved on to become his wife, it provides an image of innocence.
