The Extent of Change of the Social Makeup of The Commons

Representation of the people acts

  • First in 1832, did little
  • Second in 1867, did slightly more but still plaugued with loopholes
  • 1833 217 MPs were sons of peers
  • after 1867 still two seats per constituency, gave clear power to the aristocracy
  • Also south remained dominant in parliament

Redistribution +representation acts, 1880s

  • 1884 act extended the electorate and increased urban constituents, very good
  • 1885 act redistributed seats from the south to northern industrial towns, more fair
  • Also extended
