Atmosphere and composition of gases

Sedimentary rocks

  • Made of seperate grains, made of small sediment that is stuck together
  • Are porus - have gaps between the grains that air and water can get in, and are soft 
  • Easily scrape grains off the surface
  • Often contain fossils and contains layers
  • Examples - Limestone, Shale

Metamorphic rocks

  • Doesn't contain layers, sometimes contains fossils
  • Usually non-porus - no gaps
  • Made when heat or high pressure changes a rock that already exists
  • Examples - Marble, Slate

Igneous rocks 

  • Form when liquid rock cools and freezes 
  • Consists of crystals, have no gaps, contain layers, hard
  • Made from interlocking grains
  • Doesn't contain fossils
  • Examples - Granite, Basalt
