The life of a ham sandwhich:
MOUTH
- the sandwhich (which is called hamlet) enters the mouth
salivary glands produce saliva which contains lots of the digestive enzyme amylase.(fact: dog saliva is antiseptic)
- Teeth break down hamlet (in the mouth mechanical and chemical digestion occurs, mechanical: the teeth breaking down the food, chemical: the enzyme amylase is produced)
OESOPHAGUS:
- next Hamlet moves down the oesophagus (this is a muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach)
Hamlet (who is now a bolus (a ball of food)) moves down the oesophagus by peristalsis (circlular muscles outside the oesophagus contract and relax)
STOMACH:
- Mechanical and chemical digestion occurs again: Mechanical: Walls of stomach are pummaling hamlet, Chemical: Another enzyme: pepsin (a protease) is produced.
- hydrochloric acid is also produced here, it is the optimum PH (ph 2) for protease it work
hydrochloric acid also kils bacteria
