The Dawes General Allotment Act, 1887

1887, the Dawes General Allotment Act was passed. Allowed reservation lands to be broken into plots. Intended to destroy the power of chiefs and remove tribal structure. 

Indians were given land and made self sufficient and also allowed non indian land grabbers to make money from ex reservation land. 

No more need for buffalo, tipis, clothing and ceremonies. Sun Dance was banned and young men no longer
