King Milinda asks Nagasena his name, to which Nagasena replies: 'I am known as Nagasena... and it is by that name that my brethren in the faith address me... Nagasena... is only a generally understood term, a designation in common use. For there is no permanent individuality involved in the matter'

  • Milinda immediately draws the incorrect conclusion from this, asking 'If... there be no permanent individuality involved in the matter... who is it who devotes himself to meditation? Is it the nails, the teeth, the skin... or the brain, or any or all of these, that is Nagasena?'
