The Cold War

November 1943 - The tehran conference - it was decided that the Soviet Union would invade Japan once Germany was defeated and that Polands boundaries would move westward. 

Feburary 1945 - the yalta conference - it was decided that Germany would be reduced in size and that the United Nations would be set up. 

July 1945 - the potsdam conference - it was decided that the nazi party would be banned and that berlin would be divided into 4 zones, each ruled by the soviet union, the usa, great britian and france. 

The Grand Alliance - it was set up in 1941 to discuss what would happen to germnay once defeated in WW2. The USA, the Soviet Union and Great Britian made it up, but it came to an end in 1945 once the war was over. The big names were; Stalin, Roosevlet and Churchill. 

The Long Telegram - it was in 1946 and it was a USA ammbassador who was living in Moscow and they reported back to Truman. They said that; the Soviets saw capatalism as a threat towrds communism and that they were building their military power. 

The Novikov Telegram - it was also in 1946 and it was a Soviet Union ammbassador living in Washington DC and reporting back to Stalin. They said that the USA wanted world domination and were preparing for war against the Soviets. 

Sataliette States - they were between 1947 and 1949. Stalin set it up and countires such as Poland, Romania and Hunagry were part of it. It was were Stalin ahd control of that country. In the potsdam and yalta conferneces he said that the countries would hold free elections but they were fixed, and only communist parties ever won and non-communist parties were shut down. 

The Truman Doctrine - it was in 1947 and Truman said that communism was bad and that people were not free and that he would help any government by oroviding them money to help them be free. 

The Domino Theory - Truman was worries that if one country became communist e.g. Turkey, other countires would follow too and that was called the domino theory. 

The Marshall Plan - it was were the USA were providing $13 billion to countries who were not yet communist but who were resisting it. France, Great Britian and Italy all signed up. But you had to trade something with the USA to get this money, and it was also to help rebuild Europe. The Soviets felt that the USA were attcking them. 

Cominform - set up in 1947 by stalin. It organised all the communist countries/aprties in Europe and orgaised their leadership. It got rid of any communist opposition under the Soviet Unions control. 

Comecon - set up in 1949 by Stalin. It was the Soviet Unions version of the Mrashall Pland and countries like the Soviet Union, Hungary and Poland all signed up. They were told to resist The Marshall Plan aid. 

NATO - set up in 1949…
