The Changing Status Of Women

  • New Marraige Law 1950, meant women could easily divorce men 
  • By 1958-1965 only 2.4% of marraiges involved women under 17 
  • By 1966-1976 only 0.8% of marraiges were organised by parents 
  • Armed mobs of peasants tried to forcefully take their wives back 
  • Local cadres often refused to enforce the law 
  • Women now allowed to work alongside the men in communes
  • Kindergartens in communes meant women could work far more 
  • However often not the case, women often had to work and look after children
