Assumptions: The biological approach suggests that everything psychological is first biological, therefore, in order to fully understand human behaviour, we must acknowledge biological structures such as genes, neurochemistry and the nervous system.

Genetic basis of behaviour: Behaviour geneticists study whether behaviourial characteristics, such as intelligence, mental disorders, personality, etc., are inherited like physical characteristics such as eye colour and height. Twin studies compare the concordance rates between pairs of twins to determine the extent to which both twins share the same characteristics. MZ twins are found to have higher concordance rates, whereas DZ twins have lower concordance rates. This is a result of MZ twins sharing 100% of genes, and DZ share about 50%.

Genotype and Phenotype: Genotypes are an individuals actual genetic make-up, in contrast, Phenotypes are the way genes are expressed through physical, behavioural and psychological characteristics.
