The Battle of Hastings
(October 1066)
- Duke William finally landed in England with 9,000 men and 700 transport ships several months after expected.
- The Normans came ashore in Sussex and immediately built a motte and bailey castle.
- Used castle as a base where they raided the South of England while they prepared a battle against King Harold.
The Battle.
- Harold marched back from Stamford Bridge with an exhausted army.
- A third of his army had died in battle and another third were left behind on the march south.
- He added the Fryd to his army = not fully trained soldiers but had to fight for the King when called upon.
- Boosted his army to 7,000 but they were inferior.
14th October 1066.
- Harold tried to catch the Normans by surprise but Norman scouts warned Duke William of King Harolds advance.
