The Amicable Grant 1525

Having already demanded various forced loans and subsidies in the period 1522 - 24, Wolsey looked for new ways to raise. His solutions was to impose a new direct tax without gaining the approval of parliament.

This was a dangerous move. One of the parliament's main roles was to make sure the king did not tax the country too hard: both the fifteenths and tenths and subsidy were all granted. But if the parliament was ignored, or not consulted on matters of taxation, there was the risk of rebellion against the King's rule. The Amicable Grant demanded that priests pay one third of their income
