The Alliance System
After the Franco-Prussian War Bismarck wanted to build alliances which would keep France isolated. Bismarck successfully allied Germany to Austria-Hungary, Turkey and Russia. At the time Britain wasn't interested in continental alliances meaning that France had no useful allies. However in 1890 Bismarck was replaced by Kaiser Wilhelm II who allowed the alliance with Russia to lapse.
Germany fast became the most powerful industrial nation in Europe and the head of the central powers. They made up the Triple Alliance of Germany…
