• Most of the fighting in WW1 took place in France, particularly the North-Eastern border.
• The Germans had destroyed many mines, railways, factories, bridges and farmland. 
• The French had also suffered the most deaths.
  • Many French wanted revenge and put Clemenceau under a lot of pressure to make it happen.
• Clemenceau wanted to cripple Germany to make sure that it was never powerful enough to attack France again.
