Question 1 and 2 - Gallipoli:

  • Battle fought between the Turkish and ANZACs (soldiers from New Zealand and Austalia who were part of the British empire and fought for the Allied side in the First World War).
  • Took place because; firstly, Turkey was the only place where Britain could use its naval strength to affect the european war and interrupt stalemate and secondly, because their objective was to open a path to the Russian Black Sea ports, therefore the British planned an attack on the Turkish Dardanelles. This is the passage that separates Europe from Asia and a gateway to the Black Sea - its about 50km long and its narrowest point is aboout 1km wide.
  • Started of at the beach of Dardanelles when British
