An action potential arrives at the presynaptic membrane.

Depolarisation of the membrane causes the voltage-gated calcium (ca2+) channels to open.

Calcium ions diffuse into the synaptic knob.

This causes vesicles containing neurotransmitters to move to, and fuse with, the presynaptic membrane. Acetylcholine is released by exocytosis.
