Synapse

Synapses are gaps between neurones, they allow the selection of pathways for transmission of impulses.

The process: 

1) The action potential arrives at the synaptic knob 

2) Calcium channels open, so Ca2+ ions flow into the synaptic knob

3) The calicium ions cause vesicles contatning a neurotransmitter substance to move to the presynaptic membrane
