Support for Nazi Government, 1939-45

INITIAL RESPONSE TO THE OUTBREAK OF WAR (SEPTEMBER 1939)

• Grim and sombre determination. Differed significantly from the response seen in 1914 to WWI, with street parades having been seen. 
• Showed Nazi government's failure to indoctrinate people with the Nazis' militaristic, nationalistic values. 

EARLY SUPPORT (1939-42)

Showed support at an early stage because of the success of blitzkrieg tactics, meant that Germany had gained more territory in the first few months of WWII than she had throughout the entirety of WWI. 

• 1939 - EASTERN EUROPE: Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Lithuania, Albania
• 1940 - WESTERN EUROPE: Luxembourg, non-Vichy France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway
• 1941 - Yugoslavia, Greece, part of USSR
• 1942 - More USSR

FALLING SUPPORT (1943-45)

BATTLE OF STALINGRAD (26th AUGUST 1942-2nd FEBRUARY 1943)

• January 1943 saw the USSR seize 92,000 German troops and 24 German generals.
