Educational triage

`Triage` refers to nurses ranking and sorting patients. Gillborn and Youdell (2001) claim that triage students have three streams.

1) Middle-class students are labelled as potential university students and placed in top streams. 

2)  Some middle and working-class students are seen as C- D borderline and given extra help.

3) Mainly working-class students are labelled as `hopeless` and placed in bottom streams.

Class identity

Some students in bottom streams adopt particular dress codes that attract respect and status from other like-minded students but bring them into conflict with the school authorities.
