Albert Cohen - Status Frustration

Status Frustration - Not motivated by the success goals of mainstream values -- W.C boys start out trying to be successful in terms of mainstream values-- Culturally deprived -- fail at school --create an alternative subculture -- gain status in the eyes of their peers

A way to solve this is to give children status by giving them  legitmate opporunities.

Cloward and Ohlin -

• Environment influences behaviour and the anount and type of crimes happen.

They agree that W.C youth are denied opportunies in the 'legitmate opportunity structure' - they then seek these opportunities through illegitmate means 

Areas differ in terms of illegimate opportunities available - 3 types of subcultures as a result
