  • unwritten constitution- should have been a benefit to encourage consensus in politics but depends on trust with the monarch.
  • a cycle of distrust. fear of absolutism, which is linked with Catholicism. thirty years war.
  • the great chain of being provided stability to the nation, the alternative is anarchy and chaos. Cromwell was a political conservative but he killed the King. The King is the head of the nation and the body needs a head.
  • Cromwell's 'healing and settling' was doomed.
