STROKE

STROKE = when the blood supply to the brain is cut off/interruped/blocked

ISCHAEMIC = most common, can occur when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain.

  • aging 
  • high blood pressure
  • obesity 
  • high cholesterol levels
  • diabetes
  • excessive alcohol intake 

HAEMORRHAGIC STROKES = less common, can occur when blood vessels within the skull burst and bleeds into and around the brain.

  • being overweight and obese
  • drinking an excessive amount of alcohol 
  • smoking
  • lack of excercise 
  • stress, which may cause temporary rise in blood pressure

CAUSE

  • a blood clot forms in a main artery to the brain/ blood clot stops the flow of blood to the brain 
  • a blood clot/ air bubble/ fat globule forms in a blood vessel and is carried to the brain 
  • blood vessel bursts inside the brain
  • blood vessel on the surface of the brain bleeding into the area between the brain and the skull

SYMPTOMS

Face drooping

Arm weakness

Speech difficulty

Time to call 911

FACE

  • may have dropped to one side 
  • may unable to smile (either fully or one side)
  • sudden loss of vision/blurred vision
  • A sudden headache and stiffness of neck 

ARMS

  • may be unable to lift one or both arms and keep them there

SPEECH

  • slurred/garbles
  • unable to talk

other:

  • complete paralysis of one side of the body
  • problems with coordination and balance
  • confusion
