Different personalities can affect stress levels

  • Type A - competitive and ambitous
  • Type B - relaxed and easy going
  • Type X - balance of the two

Friedman and Rosenman - Type A personality and illness

Method: 3000 39-59 year old American males were assessed to class their personality characteristics using interviews and observations. At the beginning, none had CHD. 

Results: Eight years later, 257 had developed CHD. 70% of these were type A. Type B were found to have half the rate of heart disease than A. These results were still found when extraneous variables such as weight and smoking
