Henry VIII came to the throne following the death of Henry VII, who was the first king of the Tudor dynasty who had became king after defeating Richard III in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth at the final battle of the War of the Roses.
His blood claim to the throne was weak and decades of war had reduced monarchical power.
