Stonehenge an introduction.

A series of three pits to hold pine posts was dug on the site during the Mesolithic.

In the early Neolithic (3100BC) a small henge was created. A henge usually consists of a circular ditch with soil being used to create an external bank. This may have been used for observing the inside of the henge.

However, at Stonehenge the bank of the henge was inside the ditch and both were of a smaller size than usual.
