E-Z Isomerism

  • Position of elements either side of a C=C bond
  • E/trans - different sides
  • Z/cis - same side 
  • If joined by a C-C bond, elements can rotate around it.
  • A C=C bond means that they're fixed in position, making them seperate compunds.

Optical Isomerism

  • Occurs when 4 different elements attch to 1 carbon atom, so you can have 2 isomers which have the same elements but aren't identical
  • Like a pair of shoes or hands, can't be superimposed
  • Named Optical Isomers as they rotate…
