E-Z Isomerism
- Position of elements either side of a C=C bond
- E/trans - different sides
- Z/cis - same side
- If joined by a C-C bond, elements can rotate around it.
- A C=C bond means that they're fixed in position, making them seperate compunds.
Optical Isomerism
- Occurs when 4 different elements attch to 1 carbon atom, so you can have 2 isomers which have the same elements but aren't identical
- Like a pair of shoes or hands, can't be superimposed
- Named Optical Isomers as they rotate…
