Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can then specialise. They have the potential to cure diseases by replacing lost or damaged cells. They are found in plants and animals and there are two types of human stem cell - Adult and Embryonic. Adult stem cells have less potential to differentiate and the number of cells they can become limited by the organ from which they originate. They are reasonably easy to obtain and because they are from adults are in abundant supply. They are less likely to face immune rejction than embryonic stem cells because they can originate from the patient. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent, meaning they can differentiate into any cell as the embryo is not fully developed and stem cells muct be able to complete all essential functions.
