Stella

Stella is from the upper class and is quite gentile in her mannerisms this is shown by her saying don’t holler at me like that. However this could also be seen as flirtous. She loves her husband and plays the typical passiveness by the fact that she acts as if she struggles, she feels as strong sense of desire for him “ I can hardly stand it when he’s away for the night.

However on the other hand she is different to the stereotype as she has married down and therefore has merged with Stanley’s class this is shown by the fact the Stanley implies she loved it, “I pulled you from those columns and how you loved it” by the end of the play Stanley has a firm grip on Stella which results in blanche being sent and Stella being further integrated with his class and society in which she lives.
She is also very dependent on him “when he comes home I cry on his lap like a baby” this implies she she’s him as someone that can protect her and keep her safe from the world.

She in some way is also attracted towards Stanley’s brutality. “Why on our wedding night- soon as we came in here – he snatched off one of my slippers and rushed about the place smashing the light-bulbs with it”  she then states that she was “sort of – thrilled by it”

Her name

Stella is Latin for star this is significant to her character that all though she is living currently between two people she in away could symbolise hope and the idea of safety. She has similar personality traits in some respects to both and therefore she finds it possible to be some kind of bridge between them where as Stanley and Blanche are polar opposites.

Even when she and Stanley have argued she still gives into him and returns to him. Stella slips down the rickety stairs in her robe. Her eyes are glistening with tears and he hair lose about her throat and shoulders. They stare at each other. Then they come together with low, animal moans.” “Her eyes go blind with tenderness as she catches his head and raises him level with her. He snatches the screen door open and lifts her off her feet and bears her into the dark flat”

8 I pulled you down off them columns and how you loved it, having them coloured lights going! And wasn't we happy together, wasn't it all okay till she showed here?

Stella says

No Honey those are the L & N tracks.

I can hardly stand it when he’s away for the night.

2 I'm going to try to keep Blanche out till the party breaks up because I don't know how she would

take it. So we'll go to one of the little places in the Quarter afterwards and you'd better give me

some money.

Oh…
