Problem: Lightning- ice particles rub together to form a cloud in which a positive charge is situated at the top of the cloud and a negative charge at the bottom of the cloud.

The negative charge induces the positive charge to the ground.

Tall buildings are struck by lightning more easily as they are nearer the positive charge at the top of the cloud.

Uses:

1. Lightning conductor- metal rod connected to the earth.

Provides an easy route for lightning to take and so prevents a large build up of lightning taking place.

2. Static-Electric spraying- used to paint metal panels.

Spray nozzle is connected to the positive terminal.

Panels are connected to the negative terminal.

The panels are attracted to the positively charged paint droplets.
