Composition;
The composition of a pure substance:
- Cannot be changed
- is the same in all parts of a piece of the substance.
Pure substances:
Gold is an element and can be pure, but compounds can also be pure.
A pure substance has the same fixed composition in all its parts. Therefore, they can't be separated into other substances using physical methods, such as filtration.
Mixtures:
- A mixture contains elements and/or compounds that are not chemically joined together.
- You can use physical processes to separate mixtures into different substances.
- A mixture does not have a fixed composition.
- Example: Air is a mixture of gases. 'Air' is a MIXTURE of nitrogen,oxygen,carbon dioxide and water vapor.
Compounds:
- Definite composition- You cannot vary the amount of each element in a compound.
