Naturalistic everything the character does is for a reason, for example if the character was laughing then they would be doing this because it aids the character, he was in favour of linear performances. He used to use units and objectives (for example a full cow) and given circumstances (facts). He started the move from melodrama to naturalistic, and used big sets. The naturalism allowed people to become absorbed in the performance.

Stanislavski was born in 1863 into one of the most affluent families in Russia, as a child he became involved with amateur dramatic societies.
He took notes and evaluated any previous work, this helped him in his later career as it enabled him to critique his work effectively. He also wrote several works on the art of performance including;

Stanislavski also helped to found the Moscow art theatre in 1898, the theatre was majorly successful in the theatre world at the time and it survived with a company until the company split into two troops in 1987.
