the main aim of Stalin's policies was to industrialise and modernised the USSR as quickly as possible. he wanted backwards Russia to be the 'Soviet America'. the Russians would beat the capitalists at their own game and became a force in the world to be reckoned with. Stalin had a number of reasons- practical and ideological- for wanting to force the pace.
