Stalemate

After the German retreat both sides raced to beat the other. They extended the front towards the English channel. The main confrontation was at the first battle of Ypres where thousands died but neither army could break through. Both sides brought up machine guns and artillery forcing their opponents to seek safety in the trenches. There was a stalemate because neither side could advance.
