Stages of sleep = ultradian rhythm
Sleep can be measured by:
1 - eye movement (EOG -- Electro-oculogram)
2 - muscle movement (EMG -- Electromyogram)
3 - electral activity/trainwaves (EEG -- electroence-phalograph)
2 main types of sleep... Slow wave sleep (SWS 4 stages) & REM (rapid eye movement)

stage 2 // sleep spindles = periodic bursts of fast spiking activity lasting 1-2 secs
k complex // Our response to external stimuli e.g noise or internal stimuli like leg muscle tightening.

sleep cycle --> 3-4 x a night - 1,2,3,4,3,2,REM,2,3,4 etc

1 - AWAKE - Brain wave = Alpha, physiolodical changes = desynchronised brain waves. No set pattern
