Cells can have adaptations that allow them to do a specific job. i.e. they are specialised. their structure is always related to the function.

Ciliated cells.

Have projections known as Cilia which beat in unison to move mucus with dust and bacteria trapped in it away from the lungs in the trachea and the bronchi.

Nucleus

Red blood cell

specialised to transport oxygen. They are biconcave disk shaped They have no nucleus which allows them to pack more haemoglobin in their cells. Haemoglobin helps transport oxygen by forming oxyhaemoglobin. There is also an area of thin haemoglobin in the centre of the cell that allows rapid diffusion of gases. the function is to transport oxygen around the body.

Muscle cells

Contain protien fibres which slide between each other causing the cell to contract and, as a tissue, allow movement in the organism.

Root hair cell

specialised to absorb minerals and water from the soil and transport it to the plant leaves.

Have a long projection which increases surface area for absorption of water…
