Some uses of EM radiation

HideShow resource information

EM radiation has lots of helpful uses-like cooking and making phone calls

EM radiation can cause heating

  • Non-ionising radiation, like light, doesn't have enough energy to change atoms
  • When it's absorbed by a substance it heats it up
  • The more intense the radiation and the longer the exposure, the more it heats it up
  • This heating effect can damage your cells. For example, you get burnt if you absorb too much infrared radiation from a grill
  • The heating effect is useful though - it's how we cook food
  • Normal ovens do this with infrared radiation and microwave ovens do it with microwaves

Microwave ovens give out microwaves

  • Microwaves are absorbed by water molecules
  • There's water in all food,
