Solar and Wave Energy

Solar cells

• Use sunlight to transform light energy into electrical energy
• They generate direct current (d.c.)
• They are used to power calculators and watches that don’t require much energy

Advantages

1)    Renewable – sunlight won’t run out

2)    Although it is initially expensive to start up, the running costs are almost nil

3)    No pollution

4)    Store energy during the day to work at night

Disadvantages

1)    Won’t work during the night (an in winter in some places) unless they store energy during the day
