- The Earth recievs enegy from the Sun as incoming solar radiation. Some of this energy is lost as it passesd through the atmosphere but the overall surface has a net gain of energy, places with a deficit are the high latitide polar regions such as the Artic and Antartica.
- Only about 51% is aborbed by land and ocean (24% is aborbed by land, whilst the remaining 27% is absorbed by the oceans and seas).
- The remaining 49% is reflected, absorbed or scattered.
